Chapter 5

Kara listened for several minutes as he spoke on the phone but after a while, the numbers and the information were too mind-boggling. She quickly cleaned up the kitchen, then walked over to one of the shelves and pulled down a book.

The sun was finally starting to sink down over the horizon but there hadn’t been any sound indicating that chain saws were coming to help her escape. Curling up on the sofa, she opened the book to the first page, her mind trying to absorb the painful story of Anna Karenina. She hadn’t really been reading it, her mind going over and over the events of the past several hours. Kara still couldn’t believe that she’d spent hours in the man’s bed.

“Tolstoy?” Hunter exclaimed, standing in front of her with his hands on his hips. “You’re reading a story about a woman shamed by her affair with another man?”

Kara dropped the book onto her lap. At least he was wearing a shirt now. That was something, wasn’t it? “Did you just ruin this for me?” she demanded, glaring up at him.

Hunter chuckled. “Yep.” He walked over to the bookshelves and looked at the titles. With a wicked gleam in his eyes, he pulled a book off the shelf. “Here, read this one,” he said and handed her the grey book with just a silver tie on the cover.

Kara glanced down at the title and gasped. “I can’t read this!” she told him, trying to shove the book back as if even holding it would be wrong. “No way!”

Hunter’s phone rang again and he lifted it to his ear, the whole time he kept his eyes on Kara. He covered the mouthpiece and bent down over her where she was sitting on the couch. “You are too afraid to even open the book, aren’t you?” he challenged.

Once again, that stupid inability to ignore a dare rose up to bite her. She lifted the book again, pretending to read it. Without looking up at him, she opened the front cover, pretending to be casual about the story.

“This was made into a movie that some people are still too embarrassed to go see!” she mumbled, more to herself than to him but he caught her words, his eyes daring her to read the book as he moved back over to the other side of the great room and continued with his cell phone conversation.

She lifted the book higher so that he couldn’t see her blush, but it was a futile effort since he caught everything anyway. She heard his deep chuckle as he started naming some numbers again, boggling her with his crazy-smart brain and his all-seeing eyes. Darn him! She turned away, irritated with him for being so observant and herself for even caring.

But she started reading the book, more as a way to ignore him than because she was truly interested in the story. This was the first in the most talked about trilogy of the past few years. As she started reading, she was impressed with the tension between the two characters.
